With his father selling trucks for International Harvester, Chuck Cronich, Sr. grew up around diesel trucks. After college, he and his wife Nancy opened Chuck's Custom Service Center, Inc. at I-71 and Medina Road and Chuck began teaching adults at the Vocational School in Medina. In 1990, Chuck and Nancy moved their business to 750 West Smith Road, gave it their full focus, and they've been growing by leaps and bounds ever since. Chuck took some time this week to give us a look at some of the services he provides:
When we first started, we mainly did truck and trailer repair. When someone wanted to take a gasoline engine out of their vehicle and put a diesel in, that's what we would do. Around that same time, the transmissions in motor homes weren't very strong so we would convert them into a stronger transmission with overdrive. Those were the kind of things we enjoyed and we would make linkages and different devices and pretty much invent the whole process. Basically, if someone had something to repair or something that was broken whether it needed welded or fabricated, we would take it on as a challenge. As we grew, our competition saw where we were headed and they tried to do the same thing so we added our retail operation to give us an edge. We have the capability to install truck bodies, shorten frames, lengthen frames, put snowplows on, install dump bodies, install hitches, do chassis spring work, and we spray on bed liners. Mainly, we do everything from pick-up trucks to semi-trucks and we work on a lot of off-road machinery like cranes, generators, and stationary power plants. We fabricate and maintain a lot of unique pieces of equipment to help people get their work done. We've helped design and manufacture a high pressure washer that cuts the rubber from runways that has been left by airplanes when they land and skid and we've helped local companies like Owens Corning by redesigning some of their equipment to make it last longer. We have a lot of specialty machinery like the u-bolt benders we use to make our own u-bolts. Although we don't do automobile repair, we will install trailer hitches on cars.
We sell used trucks and trailers and have been a U-haul dealer for eighteen years providing one-way or local rentals in addition to packing boxes and supplies for moving. Our two sons Jon and Chuck, Jr. are actively involved running our 20,000 square foot facility with state of the art machinery including alignment, balancing, and press-work equipment. In addition to our inside parts department, we also handle on the road sales in addition to our web site and web site store. Next door we even have five by ten, ten by twenty, and twenty by forty foot storage units for rent. Actually, if you ask to be put on hold whenever you call us, you'll hear the complete seven minute long list of services we provide!
We as a family started racing about sixteen years ago as a hobby. It's a good, clean sport and provides a good family-type environment. More and more people were wanting a fun cart for their back yard so we got involved in selling mini-bikes and go-karts. Now we handle three different manufacturers of racing go-karts and one line of fun go-karts. We stock a lot of mini-bike and go-cart parts and we try to help the families do their own repair work. In the racing side of it, we almost race every weekend throughout the year. There are road courses, oval racing, dirt, and asphalt racing and we travel to Columbus, Ohio, Charlotte, NC, New York, Indiana, and Florida. We recommend our customers to the Sunday races at Barberton Speedway during the summer months. The racing go-karts sit lower than regular go-karts and they usually race at between 40 and 115 miles per hour, depending on track size and horse power. It's a fun sport for the entire family!
Chuck's Custom Service Center, Inc. is a great facility with fourteen very competent employees. We stock an extensive supply of parts and we have the capability to perform any type of service. We're very proud to be part of the community and we try to solve a lot of problems for a lot of different people.
