Back in the mid 1990s, Debra Marshall was going on vacation and needed to find a kennel where she could board her German Shepard while she was gone. After visiting many kennels and being disappointed with what she found, Debra decided that if she was disappointed with the local boarding kennels, there had to be a lot of others who felt the same way. Her answer to the problem was the opening of her own kennel and on December 17, 1997 she opened A Second Home to the delight of both her two legged and her four legged customers. Debra located the land for her kennel and visited twenty to thirty kennels to get a better idea of how she wanted hers to be and she designed her kennel around her findings. She visited local veterinarians to introduce them to her new kennel and once they came out to look at the new facilities, business began to grow rapidly. A Second Home boards dogs and cats and has the capability to house up to forty dogs and five cats at a time. Their service has been so successful that they usually have a pretty good waiting list with weekends booked two weeks in advance and long weekends like Labor Day and Memorial Day booked up really far in advance. Usually, their guests stay from five to seven days while their owners go on vacation but throughout the summer the kennel is busy from Fridays till Sundays as people go camping, boating, and do the normal weekend thing. Holiday time is very busy for A Second Home as people travel to be with friends and family and like to save their pets from the stress brought on by traveling. In addition to regular boarding services, A Second Home offers Doggy Day Care for a very reasonable cost where you can drop off your four legged friend any time in our morning hours and you pick them up again during their evening hours. They let the dogs out several times a day and make sure they are showered with attention that includes brushing. The dogs attending Doggy Day Care are never intermixed with each other and the outside areas at A Second Home amply sized to enable the dogs to play and exercise four times a day. Debra will even board special needs dogs such as those who are old, deaf, blind, or require medication throughout the day. Every dog at A Second Home must be fully vacinated and Debra takes a lot of pride in the cleanliness of the kennels. The kennels are cleaned daily and owners are encouraged to bring a clean, washable blanket for their pet along with their pet's preferred food, treats, and toys to ensure that their pets are as comfortable as possible. A Second Home's facilities are about thirty-five hundred square feet in size, provide a separate grooming area, and the kennels are both heated and air conditioned for maximum pet comfort. Debra says, I have a lot of regular customers whose dogs get very excited when they pull in and their dog hears the sound of our gravel drive way. When the owners are trying to say good bye and hug them and kiss them, their dog just wants to get back there with the other dogs. The majority of the dogs that have been here have had a good time because they can see other dogs, there's a lot of activity, and they aren't by themselves although we never intermix them. The dogs are each in their own six feet wide by six feet deep area where they can see and talk to the other dogs. If you have two dogs, we can even put them in the same area together and unlike most kennels, we're open seven days a week. Debra offers grooming services for all breeds of dogs and cats and her kennel services recieve raves from pets and their owners alike. Treat your furry friends to the best care available by calling A Second Home and don't forget to tell them that The Advocate sent you! |
