After many years experience gained working in the automobile after-market industry, Gil Travis wanted to found a company specializing in necessity replacement products. Due to his background in rubber molding and product development, automotive engine seals were the natural choice. Gil and his wife Jill founded Universal Molded, Inc. in 1972 as a part-time venture run from their garage. As time passed, they discovered a niche in supplying custom seals to companies that re-manufacture and re-build engines. We met with Gil, his wife and the company Treasurer, and his son Greg who oversees the sales department, and listened as Gil outlined Universal Molded's products and services;

Universal Molded, Inc. manufactures a wide range of rubber automotive engine oil seals, such as valve stem oil seals, rear main seals, and crankshaft seals. Our customer base includes gasket manufacturers, engine re-builders, production re-builders, and shops that either sell our products over the counter or install them in engines for resale to their customers.

We pay special attention to the particular needs of seals designed for re-manufacturing. For example, when a rubber seal on a crank shaft becomes embedded with dirt or contaminants, it will score the highly polished steel shaft causing a brand new seal from the factory to leak. Conventional technology requires re-builders to fit the scored crank shaft with a sleeve to cover the groove made by the old seal, then place a new seal over the sleeve. Universal Molded, Inc. has provided a more effective and economical method by redesigning the seal and re-positioning the sealing lip to another surface of the shaft having no seal wear. Customers thereby save the cost of repair sleeves when using our seals.

Our PRO-FIT seals are custom designed for our customers' specific applications. In performance applications, use and the passing of time will change the valve stem diameter's size, in addition to changing the guide size. We custom design seals to accommodate these changes while offering the same tight fit as when the engine was new.
