The year 2000 was a good year not only for wines but also for Jeff Hurt and David and Susie Blum. Jeff had opened the Wine Reserve in Medina the previous year. David and Susie had started their own personal wine cellar and had come to the Wine Reserve to shop when they were invited to attend one of the Wine Reserve's wine tastings. They went to the wine tasting on a Friday night and were so impressed with what they saw (and tasted!) that they came back on Saturday to select a few bottles of wine which they had sampled the previous evening. As chance would have it, a "help wanted" sign caught David's eye while they were choosing their wine and he decided to apply for the position. After all, as wine was their hobby and they were already doing a lot of reading and research on wines, it seemed that working there part time would give David the opportunity to gain more knowledge about wines and wine connoisseurs. To make a long story short, from this part time position, David grew into the manager's position in 2001 and now Susie works there also as the assistant manager! David and Susie understand that you can go anywhere to buy wine, beer, and spirits, but they feel that their main product is customer service. After all, this is Medina and you can't go just anywhere and find wine experts on staff but at the Wine Reserve, you'll find knowledge, experience, and a wonderfully diverse inventory from all corners of the globe. Their love of wine is your font of knowledge to draw upon any time you're not sure which wine best suits your occasion or whenever you're feeling adventurous and would like to expand your horizons. When you're having a party, simply tell them how many people you expect, whether your gathering is formal or informal, what type of menu you have planned, and the price range you're considering and they'll be able to recommend the appropriate quantity and selection that will have your guests thinking you've just returned from France. To help you gain a better understanding of wines, the Wine Reserve hosts a wine tasting every Saturday from 1:00 pm until closing time. They select a different red and white wine every week, giving you the opportunity to experience about one hundred different wines a year. They also host a wine tasting banquet every spring and fall which should be at the top of your social calendar. Although their inventory is expansive by any standard, it would be impossible to stock every available wine but if you've had a wine that you enjoy but they don't stock, they'll be happy to place a special order for you. Lest you feel that the Wine Reserve is only for the experienced connoisseur, I should point out that David and Susie enjoy being guides to those just beginning their journey into the world of wine. Magazines and books are provided in the store to enable you to increase your wine knowledge and you'll find a very cozy sitting area where you can relax as you learn. The Wine Reserve, a full service state liquor agency, can bundle your favorite wines and spirits in gift baskets and are even available for private wine tastings in your home. You'll also be pleased to discover their small selection of fine cigars that will make it possible for you to enjoy your wine with maximum style. Both David and Susie agree that one of the most enjoyable experiences for them is when a customer comes in and tells them that everything they recommended the last time was great and asks what they'd recommend this time. With knowledgeable staff and hand selected wines, it's little wonder that Medina is learning to trust the Wine Reserve's recommendations. David says that the quality of wine is very high this year and prices are lower due to the perfect weather experienced by the wine growing regions and he recommends this as one of the best times in the last few years to buy wine. Make plans to attend one of the Wine Reserve's Saturday tastings and while you're there, don't forget to tell them that The Advocate sent you! |
